The Mohave Indians named it Havasu and we translate it …”Blue Water.”
The Parker Dam stopped the free flow of the Colorado River in 1938 and its pristine waters created beautiful Lake Havasu. Twenty years later Robert McCulloch, Sr. was flying over the river in search of a test location for his company’s outboard motors. The perfect spot called out to him and he purchased 3500 acres in the peninsula area which is known today as “the island.”
McCulloch also bought a 26-mile area and developed Lake Havasu City. He selected the most amazing piece of land to build the premiere resort, Lake Havasu Hotel. Robert McCulloch’s empire continued to expand with the creation of McCulloch Oil Corporation and in 1964 McCulloch Chainsaws. As time advanced, Lake Havasu became known as a choice destination for recreation and retirement. The country was talking about this beautiful lake.
The original Nautical Beachfront Resort was built by Mr. McCulloch with only 16 rooms. Over the years he continued to develop contemporary offerings to please his ever changing guest. One requirement….every new room or suite had to have an amazing view of Thompson Bay.
In 1968, Mr. McCulloch was looking for a unique attraction to spur interest in the area. He found it… purchasing the London Bridge for $2,460,000. The Bridge was reconstructed in Lake Havasu in 1971 and “the peninsula” became “the island.”
Countless politicians and celebrities over the years have trusted the Nautical Beachfront Resort to deliver a perfect getaway, the Nautical Beachfront Resort has undergone several renovations and expansions including the development of the infamous Turtle Beach Bar and The Turtle Grill. Most recently, the Nautical Beachfront Resort brings guests the incredible infinity pool experience, “Wet!”
Our hotel is the only beachfront resort in the entire state of Arizona. It has hosted many families and friends…creating memories treasured generation after generation.
